Halle Berry? Isn’t she a bit too old to play Ariel? Oh wait … Halle Bailey! The 19-year-old actress and singer has taken the lead role in the live action remake of The Little Mermaid. You probably know Haily as one of the two members in the R&B group Chloe X Halle and from the series Grown-ish. There has been a lot of discussion going on since the film makers released the cast names of The Little Mermaid live action remake. In the end, Ariel is a classic Disney princess and a favorite to many.
Why is Ariel black in the live action remake?
Who plays Ariel in the new Little Mermaid? The answer is Halle Baily. But wait a minute, doesn’t Halle Baily have a darker skin tone? Yes. Then why is she being cast as playing Ariel, for she is not black at all? This is a question many Disney fans are asking themselves and some fans are even very angry about this whole situation, which causes a lot of discussion. After all, in the original book written by writer Hans Christian Andersen, Ariel has a white skintone and red hair, just like in the Disney movie. Director Rob Marshall said in a statement casting Halle: “After an extensive search, it was abundantly clear that Halle possesses that rare combination of spirit, heart, youth, innocence, and substance—plus a glorious singing voice—all intrinsic qualities necessary to play this iconic role.” It seems Disney does not hold on that tight to similarities in appearance and looks in this case, but more values a matching personality. If it’s a good choice in this case, we leave up to you to decide. That being said, let’s take a look to the rest of the cast!
The Little Mermaid Live Action Cast
Prince Eric will be played by Jonah Hauer-King. Jonah had roles in several movies in recent years, including Lucas Ray in the 2019’s movie A Dog’s Way Home. Alright Disney, here we can difinitely see some similarities in looks. We bet this choice will not cause so many discussions, lol. But hey, you’ll be the judge!
And then there is yet another point of discussion going on, and that is about the actress who plays Ursula in the The Little Mermaid live action remake. She will be played by Melissa McCarthy. Again, many fans are getting upset. According to them, Ursula was based off a drag queen so it should be a drag queen to be cast for this part. Here goes again, it’s up to you to decide. We surely see potential.
And then there are the other roles who need to be fulfilled. The latest update is that Javier Bardem is being looked at to play Ariel’s father, the mighty King Triton. And it looks like Jacob Tremblay will take care of Flounder’s voice, and David Diggs of Sebastians. Either way, we now know who plays Ariel in the new Little Mermaid and we think this Disney remake will surely cause more discussions in the future, if not the most discussion of any Disney live action cast!
